Where To Get Fishing Lure Templates

Before You Can Make Fishing Lures You Need Some Fishing Lure Templates
You will need a Lure Template to Mark Out Your Lures
In advance of starting to work on any fishing lures that you would like to build for yourself you will need to know such things as the length of the lure, it's width, it's general shape, the number of hooks to be attached and other such details which will govern what the finished lure will look  like and what it will do in the water. Of course the actual type of fishing lure and the species of fish you intend to catch with it will dictate many of these variables - a lure for catching trout in a small shallow river will have very different characteristics than say a lure for catching pike in a deep open water lake. Whatever fishing lure you decide to build, in the very same way that you would require blueprints to build a house you will need lure templates to make some lures. It is of course possible to build a fishing lure without using a lure template but the process would be very much trial and error and could result in a lot of wasted time making lures that are not effective. It is far better in my opinion to work to proven lure templates or at least lure template designs based on already successful lures.

Three Ways To Get Lure Templates
If you have never made a fishing lure before then where can you get a lure template from? There are three main ways that I can think of to get a lure template for your lure making projects:
  1. Go about finding a proven lure template which has been drawn up by someone who has already built a successful lure.
  2. Make one yourself by copying the shape and profile of an existing lure - you could copy one of your favourite shop bought lures or even copy the shape and profile of a lure from a picture of one.
  3. Try to design your own lure and hence design your own lure template perhaps based on a lure that you like and know to be effective.
Of the three ways of getting some fishing lure templates mentioned above in this blog post I'm going to talk about the first one - proven lure templates - and in particular where to get them online.
Using A Proven Lure Template
Using a proven lure template will probably give you the best chance of making a really good homemade lure the first time around. If you're very keen to catch a few fish with some homemade lures that will be sure to work well then this is almost certainly the best way to go. So how do we go about getting hold of some 'proven lure templates' then? There are probably two main ways you can go about getting them:

  1.  Firstly you can search the internet - there are quite a few places online where you can copy or download some lure templates for free.
  2.  Secondly you can buy some - there are a number of books and ebooks available on the subject of lure making most of which have a section or chapter containing lure templates that you can work from.

Where To Get Free Lure Templates Online
Below I have listed a few of the places online where you can find some lure templates to either copy or download for free and then print out to use for making some lures. In most cases you will need to play around with your printer settings to get the templates to the size that you require or alternatively use microsoft paint or other digital imaging program to change the sizes.

Lurebuilding 101:
Some Lure Templates from Lurebuilding101 Website
One of the best sources of lure templates on the internet that I could find is a Dutch website called Lurebuilding 101. Not only will you find lots of lure templates but also lots of lure making 'how to' guides as well. There's an awful lot of lure making information on the site and you should probably free up an hour or so before you head over there so that you can have a proper look around! I've posted a picture here of some of the templates that I have downloaded from the site for future lure making projects. This should give you an idea of the wide range of lure templates available over there - check it out for yourself, Click Here for Lurebuilding101 lure templates.

Hungarian Site?
Japanese Wooden Lure Templates
I cant remember where exactly I found the link to this site - probably a fishing forum or blog somewhere. The site itself seems to be fairly random with regard to the content it has on it's pages but one of it's pages has a lure making tutorial along with nine easy to print out fishing lure templates. The templates are for Japanese type wooden lures designed to be covered with foil tape to give them a silvery shine. I'm sure the foil is not really necessary and finishing the lures in any other way would still produce some great lures. The lure templates themselves are very detailed giving exact measurements for hook arrangement and internal weighting positions.

Approximate Translation of Japanese Headings

I have added a rough translation typed in red on the picture here for what the Japanese headings on the lure template pages mean. Downloading and printing these lure templates was very easy I simply 'right clicked' on the templates saved the images to my computer and printed them out as they were - they printed out at almost exactly the correct size going by the measurements on the templates drawings themselves. That was pretty handy as it saved a bit of time messing about with the images to get them to print at the correct size which is not always that easy! Here's the link - Click Here for Japanese wooden lure templates.

Where To Buy Fishing Lure Templates Online
In the very unlikely event that you cant find a lure template for free on the internet which would be suitable for your intended lure making project it is of course possible to spend a few euros/dollars to get hold of some. Most of the fishing lure templates which are available for purchase are to be found within various lure making books or ebooks. Rather than buy the templates themselves you may have to buy the book or ebook to get hold of them. If you are new to lure making, buying a book about how to make fishing lures might not be such a bad idea. If on the other hand you are an experienced lure maker then buying a 'how to make fishing lures' book just to get hold of some fishing lure templates is probably not something you would consider. Either way I have put together a list of lure making books and ebooks you can buy which contain some fishing lure templates that you can use for your homemade lures.

Greg Vinall's Wooden Lure Making Ebook
Greg is an Australian lure maker and author on the subject of lure making. He owns a website where he sells a 'How To Make Wooden Lures' ebook. If you buy his ebook you also get a copy of his twelve proven lure templates ebook along with some other lure making related stuff. I have bought his ebook myself and so have a copy of the lure templates ebook. I have even gone as far as making a couple of crankbaits using his templates (see here) but unfortunately have not yet had the time to test them out properly. If you want a copy of Greg's templates you will however have to buy his ebook - if you'd like to check it out here's the link.

Making Wooden Fishing Lures by Rich Rousseau
This book looks to be one of the better lure making books available. I do not have a copy of it myself but some of the reviews written about it are encouraging. If you take a look at the snapshot of the table of contents (pictured above) you can see that there are lure templates and instructions on how to make eleven different wooden lures. You can check out this book at Amazon where you can take a sneak peak inside, read some customer reviews and possibly buy one second hand.            Check Out This Book

Basic Fishing Lure Carving by Greg Hays
This book it seems illustrates the basics of hand carving wooden fishing lures and according to the description of the book it also has the patterns (lure templates) for each of the lures that it shows you how to make. It is however difficult to tell from the description of the book just how many lure templates that this book contains or even what kind of lures those templates are for.                    Check it Out Here

How To Make Fishing Lures - Polymer Jigs With 18 Different Plans by Don Lokke
If learning how to make jigs is your goal then this ebook may be of interest to you as it contains the  lure templates required to make 18 different designs of polymer jig. The description of the book claims that you can learn how to make a fishing lure in 15 minutes! You can find out more about it by Clicking Here.

Carved Wood - How To Make Fishing Lures by Don Lokke
This wooden lure making guide has 10 different full colour fishing lure templates you can use. To check it out Go Here.

How To Make Fishing Lures - Polymer Crankbaits With 15 Designs by Don Lokke
This lure making ebook describes the techniques used to make crankbaits from polymer clay. It contains 15 fishing lure templates that you can use for your lures. Go Here to check it out.

Do You Know Somewhere Else Online To Get Some Lure Templates?
I hope you found the lure template information and links on this page helpful. It took me a while to browse around the internet and put it all together but now I have more than enough lure templates for any kind of lure that I might want to build. If you know of any other good sources of fishing lure templates that can be found online that I have not included here in this post I would love to know about them. If you could let me know by posting a comment below I will update this page to include them. If you think your fishing friends might find the information in this post useful  you can easily share it with them using the email, facebook, twitter and google plus links below.

Edit - I've recently added a Lure Templates Page to my blog where I'll be posting all of my own lure templates from now on (they're free of course, just copy and paste them). Check it out here MY LURE TEMPLATES PAGE.

Joe, I really like your blog, lots of good information. I have been making lures for a long time, just self thought. I haven't looked up other lure makers on the net until recently to maybe pick up some new techniques and ideas. I don't sell lures, just enjoy making them for myself and friends. kept up the good work. Thanks

@Anonymous
Thanks for your comment. I'm glad you enjoyed reading through my blog, it's just a pity I don't have the time to post new stuff more often. I do however have a few projects completed and fully photographed, I just need to find the time to write them up and post them here.

Like you I don't sell any lures and have no intention of ever doing so. The whole point of making lures in my opinion is to be able to have a lure that is the exact shape, size and colour that you require and swims at the exact depth with the specific action that you want. When you buy a lure you will of course also know the shape colour and size but what that lure does in the water you won't know until you spend a few hours casting it around. If it's not what you need you have to go buy another lure. When you know how to make your own lures you get exactly what you want every time!

The Hays book is junk!!! No new info and almost nothing in the way of detailed instruction for finishing the lure! ALL BOOKS should include a list of suggested materials with suppliers info for making the lures and then finishing them!

@Bob
Hey Bob, thanks for taking the time to post a comment here. I'm sure your comment may prove helpful to others who are considering buying this book.

I don't actually own a copy of it myself but have included it here in this blog post for the sake of 'completeness' I suppose you could say. There are not really that many books available on the subject of lure making so I have just included all the ones I could find that claim to have lure templates contained within.

I do remember reading a comment somewhere else by someone who had also bought the Hays book. They mentioned that a large proportion of the book is dedicated to the making of 'fancy' wooden display boxes for your homemade lures. This I'm sure would not be of interest to the majority of lure makers out there!

There may be some value in this book for some people but if you were only going to buy one lure making book then it would seem that this book is not the one!

@Unknown Being able to 3D model your homemade lures would be pretty cool - not something I'm able to do myself. I'd love to see how your son's lures turn out.

@Anonymous
Thanks for stopping by. Unfortunately I don't have nearly as much time for working on this blog as I would like. The updates however will keep coming - but very slowly.

Since my free time is so limited I'm sure you'll understand that when I do get some time to spare I tend to go fishing rather than sit at my computer writing this blog.

Do check back form time to time though as I will continue to update this blog with new stuff whenever I do get the time!

What ever happened to the 3D model by your son? Might you have any links for 3d printing? Thank you for your blog and information!
Tim

@Tim
Hey Tim,
the 3D modelling was actually an idea from one of my readers who unfortunately never got back to me with the details of how that 3D modelling turned out! If they ever do follow up and get back to me with the details I will certainly post them here on my blog.
